STRESSING OVER YOUR MATH??
Hook up with us- and our network of other students..
MiLearn, along with a team of 4 web designers and a college math teacher developed this online tutorial to help with the huge problem of Grade 10 level math failures-particularly within the Quebec high school system.
If you are a student in a Quebec high school -you know that Math 436 is a killer- and most students will fail it. Get ready. That is the reality- no matter how the school boards try and sugar coat it- students fail this course in droves. If you know someone who works in the high school system or in CEGEP- – ask them to look at the numbers- summer students -taking this course over again because they were not prepared- or had teachers that were not prepared.
When we went out to schools in the Montreal region for example- they turned us away at first- saying that they know how to teach- they know what they are doing- they do not need any new type of online, e-learning, tutorials..thank you very much.
Yes indeed – thank you! And I am certain there are parents and students alike praising all the goodness and fuzzy feelings that comes out of a math classroom – especially when preparing to enter college or university!
The smarter schools -picked up on what we have been trying to do- use a bit of technology and move with the learning styles of students in an online environment. We thank leaders like Lower Canada College, and Loyola High School in Montreal in having their students access our tutorials- and in providing feedback.
Enjoy!

I’m having troubles with grade 10 math, my dad keeps freaking because I’m failing, and its no helping its making it worse actually, and i don’t understand my teacher at all even though he try’s to explain things in simple terms, i really need to do well to pass my final and provincial exams do u have any tips or can point me in the right direction?
hey man.
Don’t let math freak you out. Most students in G10 math in Canada (Quebec especially it seems) are in the same boat. A few suggestions…
1) think of Math as nothing more then another ‘language’ . Much like English, or French there are rules to follow. At times when studying a language the rules don’t make much sense- well math is no different. A lot of the rules don’t make sense to many students. Don’t think about ‘why’, or how come, just accept a rule as a rule ..this will at least give you some good head space:)
2) if you play sports (a good way to learn math concepts) is to put the rule into action. Think of the making of a skate board park. A lot of cool ramps of different sizes- right? Well there are also tons of triangles and slopes that go into making the right pitch- for a wicked ramp.
3) We have tones of examples at milearn.com on our Math page. Look at “Math 436″ (#3) or Practical Trig examples (#14).
Let me know if this helps.

i’m not necessarily having trouble understanding grade ten math its just that i put so much effort into each test and all of the in-class summatives but when it comes down to the test I completely blank out, i remember the formulas but i can’t remember where and how to use them in a problem and when or if i get over my blanking problem on the test im usually out of time. I really need to do well on the in-class summative next tuesday and the exam which is the 15th of June so i can save my math mark.
Please help me ive never failed before and i dont want to start now.

I have a math test tomorrow, and I’m having trouble studying.
During class, the teacher taught us using powerpoints in dull colours and thick booklets of questions.
I tried to work at it, but the teaching methods weren’t getting through to me.
Does anyone know any sites, or interactive activities I can use to study for my test?

Shel-
Our grade 10 self help tutorials cover most of the alegbra usually covered by high schools in Canada.. Try this tutorial- http://www.milearn.net/Math436b/MainMenu.htm
It has examples – a step by step approach to typical functions- and practice tests at the end of each section. Use these with your school text book and see how it works out. Take each section on its own and don’t move on until you feel you have mastered and understood the concepts.
Remember- math is like learning a language. There are rules that you follow (and sometimes – yes- they don’t seem to make sense!).
Let us know how you are progessing- write back here and we will do what we can.
Good luck Shel !

I usually do very well in math. But this year I got stuck with a teacher, who is horrible! Our whole class is failing. I was managing to get 50% all year. But suddenly 2 weeks before our provicial ive dropped to 44% what is the lowest possible mark you can get in math 10 take the 20% final, get 0 on the final and still pass. And any online pages I can use to help me prepare, so I won’t fail? Ive never failed anything before, and I dont have the time to do summer school.

hi Kay
Grade 10 provincial math can be found on miLearn at the link below. (it is a “436 i you are in Quebec)
either way it is pretty standard Gr 10 Algebra. What we have developed (with our Math consultant) is a step by step approach to the problems in chapter (reflection) format. Look at each concept- followed by an example (again it shows the steps you need to do along the way- and some are long but necessary!), and then at the end of each section there are practice examples that you can work on (just click for the answers). We have also included a glossary of math terms and- really important and cool- provincial exams (taken exactly from past provincial exams). If you take the time- go through (over & over) our pages, we are sure you will see an improvement in your grades. It is one of the hardest subjects in HS which is why we have designed this for HS students.. here is the link..

for other exams-info just click on the math link on our home page milearn.com
pass us along to anyone you know that could also use the help (and has a lousy teacher:)
good luck- keep in touch- let us know..
cheers

Hi, I am a retired teacher and have tutored math 436 in the past. Is there any possibility that there are summer courses in the high schools for students who have not passed the course? If a student has not passed a course they must be able to take it in the summer so that they can graduate, so they must offer some of these courses in the summer months….Try to see someone in the high schools and see if you’d be able to take the courses you want. There is also Adult Education ( I believe in Pointe Claire on cartier ave.) They may offer certain courses as well. Please let me know if you have any luck! GOOD LUCK and good for you tohave found what you want to do! Ciao for now, Linda
